Diagnostic tests for women above 30

A woman’s body tends to undergo varied psychological, physical as well as hormonal changes throughout her lifetime. As a woman ages her body starts showing irregular metabolic activities and becomes prone to various diseases resulting in high chances of developing troublesome health problems. In the long run, what seems like minor initially diseases may turn into grave health conditions.

To avoid such circumstances, it is necessary for women to undergo regular health check-ups after hitting certain age. These tests are deemed as ‘essential tests’ as they help you understand the present condition and deficiencies associated with your body.

Here we are highlighting 5 tests that every woman above the age of 30 should take to avoid medical complications in the future:

  1. Thyroid Inspection -Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH Test):

Irregular functioning of thyroid is one of the most common and an increasing problem among women of all age especially above 30. A Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test helps you to determine if your thyroid glands are not producing enough hormones. Hair fall, irregular menstrual cycle, mood swings and depression are some of the prominent signs of irregular functioning of thyroid glands.

  2. Vitamin D and Calcium Test:

Around 200 million women worldwide are said to be affected with Osteoporosis (condition in which the bones become weak and brittle due to lack of calcium). To avoid this condition and push the bones to work effectively, the levels of calcium and Vitamin D in the body should be regularly checked. After a proper check-up, doctors mostly advise women to start vitamin D supplements as per their condition.

  3. Lipid Profile/Panel Test – Monitors Cholesterol:-

This test checks and monitors the cholesterol levels of one’s body. Cholesterol is essential in the body as it maintains the metabolic functions, however excess of cholesterol can take a toll on the cardiovascular health of a person. It can result in artery and vein blockage- resulting in heart condition and brain damage. Hence, it is advised to have frequent cholesterol level check-ups, especially for women having diabetes, heart or kidney conditions.

  4. Examination of Reproductive Organs- Pap Smear with Pelvic Exam:-

A Pap smear test detects the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection to check if any precancerous cells are present in lowest part of the vagina also called as cervix. A Pap Smear test helps in early detection of grave diseases like cervical cancer.

While the Pelvic test involves a physical examination of reproductive organs- uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, vulva, rectum and bladder to look for any physical abnormalities. If you notice vaginal bleeding, excessive vaginal discharge in the form of lumps consider taking a Pam smear as well as a Pelvic exam to avoid further complications.

  5. Mammogram- A complete breast examination:-

If you are a woman over 30 years of age, it is of utmost importance to take a mammogram test (complete breast check-up) to avoid any risk of breast cancer. It is one of the most common type of cancer found in women all over the world and can be cured if detected early. This test involves x-ray imaging which is done by keeping the patient’s breast compressed between two plates to detect any lumps. This test should be done once every 2 years and is usually recommended if you have a family history of breast cancer. You should also learn breast self-examination done to examine any pain, discharge, swelling, lump or thickening of the breast.

As you grow past 30, your body starts showing gradual changes which is a normal process. However, if these changes are not kept in check it may lead to health issues. Hence, it becomes vital to run regular health check-ups along with maintaining a well-balanced and a healthy lifestyle.
